In 2006, Jacob Gerritsen, an astrophotographer, purchased farm land in Lincolnville, ME to build an observatory. Jacob and his wife, Terry, instantly fell in love with the dark skies and open fields. The land overlooks Levenseller Mountain and neighbors Duck Trap River where Atlantic salmon return to spawn. At night, it is perfect for star and galaxy gazing.
Since the founding of Galaxy Quest Observatory, Jacob has shared it with the community through Star Parties, inviting everyone to see Saturn or the Witch’s Broom Nebula through a telescope.
Soon after, Jacob thought the farm felt too empty without animals, and brought five donkeys from Vermont to graze the pasture. Stars, planets, and donkeys: Donkey Universe was born.
A few years passed and the donkeys have since returned to Vermont. On January 2013, Josh Gerritsen and Marya Gelvosa moved to Donkey Universe to start a pastured meat farm.
Josh continues to raise 100% grass-fed beef, lamb, and organic pastured eggs.
